What Happens at a Child’s First Chiropractic Visit?
Taking your child to a chiropractor for the first time can come with a lot of questions.
What will the chiropractor check? Will my child need X-rays? Are adjustments gentle? What if my child is nervous or doesn’t want to cooperate?
At New Journey Chiropractic, we understand that trusting someone with your child is a big decision. That’s why your child’s first chiropractic visit isn’t about rushing into an adjustment. It’s about listening to your concerns, getting to know your child, evaluating their nervous system, and determining whether chiropractic care is appropriate for them.
Here’s what you can expect when you bring your child to our Ormond Beach chiropractic office.
Step 1: We Start With Your Child’s Story
Every child’s story is different, so their examination should be too.
Your child’s first visit begins with a detailed consultation. Depending on their age and reason for visiting, we’ll talk about their health history, development, current concerns, previous injuries, daily activities, and other factors that may be important.
For babies and younger children, we may also ask about pregnancy, birth, feeding, sleep, developmental milestones, and early childhood experiences.
For older children and teens, the conversation may include school, sports, posture, previous injuries, sleep, and the physical and emotional stresses they’re experiencing.
This isn’t about checking boxes on a form. It’s about understanding the whole child before we begin the examination.
Step 2: A Child-Friendly Chiropractic Examination
Next, we’ll perform an examination appropriate for your child’s age, development, history, and reason for visiting.
A baby’s examination should not look like a teenager’s examination and neither should look exactly like an adult’s.
We may evaluate areas such as posture, movement, spinal function, balance, reflexes, and other neurological or orthopedic findings when appropriate.
Most importantly, we work at your child’s pace.
Some kids walk into our office ready to participate in everything. Others need a little more time to warm up.
That’s okay.
We want children to feel safe and comfortable in our office, and we never expect a nervous toddler to suddenly behave like a tiny adult patient.
Step 3: INSiGHT Nervous System Scans
When appropriate, your child’s examination may include INSiGHT Scans.
These non-invasive scans give us objective information about different aspects of nervous system and physiological function.
Depending on which scans are appropriate for your child, the technology may evaluate patterns such as muscle activity, temperature regulation, and heart rate variability.
There are no needles, and INSiGHT Scans do not use radiation.
The scans are not used to diagnose a disease or medical condition. Instead, they provide another piece of objective information that we consider alongside your child’s history and physical examination.
For parents, they can also provide a helpful visual when we sit down to explain what we found.
Step 4: Will My Child Need X-Rays?
Not every child needs X-rays.
The decision to take X-rays is based on factors such as your child’s age, health history, examination findings, symptoms or concerns, and whether imaging is clinically necessary.
If we believe X-rays are appropriate, we’ll explain why before moving forward.
INSiGHT Scans and X-rays are also not the same thing. INSiGHT Scans provide information about aspects of physiological and nervous system function, while X-rays provide structural information.
Step 5: We Review the Findings
After gathering the information we need, we put the pieces together.
Your child’s history, examination findings, INSiGHT Scans when performed, and X-rays when necessary all help us develop a more complete picture.
Rather than simply telling you that something is “out,” we want you to understand what we found, why it matters, and what we recommend.
During your child’s report of findings, we’ll review the relevant results, answer your questions, and discuss whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
If we believe your child needs evaluation or care outside the scope of chiropractic, we’ll discuss that with you as well.
What Does a Pediatric Chiropractic Adjustment Look Like?
This is often the part parents are most curious and sometimes most nervous about.
Pediatric chiropractic adjustments are modified for a child’s age, size, development, and individual needs.
Adjusting an infant is very different from adjusting an adult.
For babies and young children, techniques can be extremely gentle and may use light, specific pressure rather than the type of adjustment many adults picture when they hear the word “chiropractic.”
As children grow, the techniques used can change based on their size, development, examination findings, and comfort.
There is no one-size-fits-all pediatric adjustment.
What If My Child Is Nervous?
That’s okay.
Some children want to know exactly what we’re doing. Some want to touch everything first. Some need Mom or Dad right beside them. And some need a visit or two before they feel completely comfortable.
We work with children every day, and we know that earning their trust matters.
We explain things in language they can understand, let them ask questions, and involve parents throughout the process.
Our goal isn’t simply to “get through” the examination. We want your child to feel heard, respected, and safe in our office.
Why Would a Parent Bring a Child to a Chiropractor?
Families seek chiropractic care for many different reasons.
Some parents initially contact us because their child is experiencing discomfort or because they have concerns about posture, sports, or physical stress.
Other families are interested in a nervous-system-focused approach to chiropractic care and want to better understand how their child’s body is functioning and adapting.
Whatever brings your family through our doors, we don’t assume that every child needs the same care—or that every concern has the same cause.
We start by evaluating your child.
What About Babies?
Babies deserve an examination designed specifically for them.
An infant’s history and examination may look at factors related to pregnancy, birth, feeding, development, movement, and other concerns discussed with the parent.
If chiropractic care is appropriate, the techniques used with an infant are modified specifically for their size and stage of development.
Parents are involved throughout the process, and we’re always happy to explain what we’re checking and why.
Your Questions Are Welcome
Parents should feel comfortable asking questions about their child’s healthcare.
Ask us what we’re examining.
Ask why we’re recommending something.
Ask us to explain the scans.
Ask why we do or don’t recommend X-rays.
Ask what an adjustment will look like before we perform it.
We want you to understand your child’s care and feel comfortable with the decisions you’re making for your family.
