Pregnancy Sciatica & Chiropractic Care
Pregnancy Sciatica & Chiropractic Care in Ormond Beach
Pregnancy can bring many changes to your body, and for some moms, that includes sciatic-like pain that travels from the low back into the hip, glute, or leg. At New Journey Chiropractic, we provide gentle, neurologically-focused chiropractic care to help support comfort, mobility, and nervous system function throughout pregnancy.
What Is It?
Pregnancy sciatica refers to pain, irritation, or discomfort that follows the path of the sciatic nerve. This nerve travels from the lower back through the hips, glutes, and down the legs. During pregnancy, changes in posture, pelvic alignment, ligament laxity, and baby’s growth can place added stress on the low back and pelvis, sometimes contributing to sciatic-like symptoms.
Common Signs & Symptoms
- Low back pain
- Hip or glute pain
- Pain traveling down one leg
- Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations
- Discomfort when walking, standing, or changing positions
- Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting
- Pelvic or sacroiliac joint discomfort
Possible Causes
Pregnancy sciatica may be related to changes in posture, weight distribution, pelvic mechanics, muscle tension, or irritation near the sciatic nerve. As the body prepares for birth, hormonal changes allow ligaments to relax, which may increase stress on the pelvis, hips, and low back.
Sciatic-like pain can also come from pelvic imbalance, tight glute muscles, sacroiliac joint irritation, or lumbar spine stress.
Red Flags
Pregnant moms should contact their OB, midwife, or medical provider right away if they experience severe weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area, fever, trauma, severe abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, contractions, or sudden swelling.
How New Journey Chiropractic Approaches Care
At New Journey Chiropractic, we take a neurologically-focused approach to pregnancy care. We look at how the spine, pelvis, and nervous system are adapting to the physical demands of pregnancy.
